19 years ago Susan Morrow broke up her husband Edward for richer and more handsome man and she married with a doctor. A successful Los Angeles art-gallery owner's idyllic life is marred by the constant traveling of her handsome second husband.

One day her ex-husband Edward sent his new novel drafts to her.

The novel tells the story of a teacher who finds a trip with his family turning into a nightmare. While Susan is reading the book, it forces her to examine her past and confront some dark truths.

At the beginning of the movie, For a long time, they used the cheerful dance of a fat, naked and ugly woman with the band items in her hand as a beautiful metaphor. At first this is not understood, but the ending of the film we can understand. The naked and fat woman on the beginning of the film is ugly from the outside but she is cheerful from the inside and Susan who we saw at the end of the film, is beautiful from the outside but cheerless from inside. Susan looks leading a happy and beautiful life on the outside.

She is successful (art-gallery owner), beautiful, she has handsome and rich husband, she has daughter, cozy life,..etc Everything looks okay from outside but in real her husband cheating her, She is not happy. So naked, fat woman is a nice metaphor.

The film tells us what wants to tell us through metaphors. So it pushes people to think like riddles. I really liked this way of movie.

When the film focuses on the past, they show the happiness and innocence of Susan and Edward. They eat together, fall in love and want to get married. But Susan's rich and flamboyant mother does not want to allow her marriage. But Susan refuses her mother's decision because she doesn't want to be like her mother and there is no flashback for a long time after that.

The other flashback to the past focuses on Edward's support of Susan in every field, and Susan does not support Edward in every field. Susan says to Edward " How long are you going to do this? Is this what you want! ”. In this part Susan's mother came to my mind. Because her mother said to her " Now that you don't notice it, you're too young and you have everything, but in the future you'll understand that you want this bourgeois which you call , when want it in the future, Edward couldn't give you that.". I saw she is missing the bourgeois while she was saying " How long are you going to do this? Is this what you want! ”.

Edward doesn't make enough money and devotes his time to writing books, but he's not good at it. I mean he can't make good money and this doesn't keep Susan happy.

And in the last flashback, they tell us about Susan's falling in love with a more attractive and richer man, and having his child, Edward, get an abortion without her knowledge. And then they're showing that Edward was destroyed.

At the end of the film, I saw a beautiful metaphor about the book and the connection between Susan and Edward's past.

1. It is a clear message Susan connecting with the novel and their past.

2. Ray in the book is actually Susan. The novel shows us Susan have an abortion with Ray killed Tony's wife and his daughter. We can understand that's why this part is so long that Ray took Tony and his family out of the way. Because that is actually the metaphor of the part that their relationship crunched and went towards collapse. I think they've kept that part long to show how annoying and how bad the situation is. And the novel shows how Tony got his revenge on Ray after all this happen. In the end, Tony found Ray who killed his wife and daughter. Then Tony shot twice in his chest. In real life Edward takes his own revenge on Susan by sending her this book he calls Nocturnal Animals.

Susan likes Edward's writings this time. I think the reason why she didn't like Edward's text on flashback was because of their bad statuation. She wasn't happy anymore. She found him weak. She started to want bourgeois as her mother told. And Edward could not give her all of this. She felt cold to him. She found Edward's dream is waste of time.

Let's talk about the end of the movie.

In the book, Tony character stumbled, fell down and accidentally he shot himself. At that moment he is dying. The book ends with that chapter.

And at this point, in real life, Susan understands how much she misses Edward and she want to meet him. She sent him a mail and They decided to meet each other.

She is wearing a dress really elegant. When Susan went to meeting place, she waits there for hours, but Edward doesn't come.

And the last part of the film shows Susan's eyes.

In one of flashback to the past, Edward said something like this to Susan: " Your eyes look a lot like your mom. Sad. But it's so beautiful " And Susan refused to look like her mother and was against Edward. In the last chapter of the film, we see that Susan is like her mother, and even the same.

Instead of telling the things what happened between Edward and Susan , they were told through the book " Nocturnal Animals."

I really like all the metaphors in the movie, even I won't watch second time. Lower text of movie is meaningful and nice but to watch one time is enough for me.

But it's a movie that I definitely appreciate. It tells the story of separation, which everyone knows, in a very different way and ingenious way through the book.

Filmin en başındaki yazılar gösterilirken uzun bir süre, şişman, çıplak ve çirkin bir kadının elindeki bando eşyalarıyla neşeli bir şekilde dans edişi gösteriliyor. Başta bu can sıkıcı oluyor ama filmin sonunda bunun güzel bir metafor olduğunu görüyorsunuz. En baştaki çıplak, şişman kadın dıştan çirkin ama içten neşeli,filmin en sonunda gördüğümüz Susan'ın hali ise dıştan güzel ama içten çirkin görünüyor. Susan dıştan mutlu ve güzel bir hayat sürüyor gibi. Başarılı (daha yeni resim galerisi oldu),güzel,yakışıklı ve zengin bir kocası var,çocuğu var,...vs.

Bu noktaları açıdan bakınca güzel bir metafor kullanmış.

Film bize anlatmak istediği şeyi hep metaforlar üzerinden veriyor ve Buda bilmece gibi insanı düşünmeye itiyor. O yönden filmi gerçekten sevdim .

Filmin geçmişe odaklandığı sıralarda, Susan ile Edward'ın mutluluğunu ve masumiyetini gösteriyorlar. Gençken daha saf nasıl düşünülüyor ve sevgi nasılda herşeyin üstünde oluyor açıkça görebiliyoruz. Birlikte yemek yiyorlar, aşık oluyorlar ve evlenmek istiyorlar. Fakat Susan'ın zengin annesi, bu evliliğe izin vermek istemiyor. Ama Susan annesi gibi olmak istemediği için annesinin kararına karşı çıkıyor. Ve bundan sonra uzun bir süre kitaba ve gerçek hayata dönüyorlar.

Geçmişe yapılan diğer flashback ise Edward'ın Susan'ı her alanda desteklemesine karşılık Susan'ın Edward'ı yazdığı roman konusunda desteklememesini ve hiç beğenmemesine odaklanıyor.

Susan Edward’a “ Daha ne kadar böyle devam edeceksin. Gerçekten stediğin bu mu! ” gibisinden birşeyler diyor. O sahnede Susan’ın annesi aklıma geldi. Çünkü kadın kızına demişti ki “Şuan bunu fark etmiyorsun çok geçsin ve herşeye sahipsin ama ileride bu burjuva dediğin şeyi istediğini anlayacaksın. Her ne kadar şimdi iğrensende gelecekte bunu isteyeceksin ve Edward sana bunu veremeyecek” diyor. Yani susan Edward’a “ Daha ne kadar böyle gidebilirsin? İstediğin bu mu! " derken orada ben burjuva yı özlediğini gördüm.

Edward yeterli para kazanamıyor ve vaktini kitap yazmaya ayırıyor ama bu konuda da pek iyi değil. Yani iyi paralar kazanamıyor ve buda Susan'ı mutlu etmemeye başlıyor.

Ve son flashback de Susan'ın daha çekici ve zengin bir adama aşık oluşunu ve Edward'dan olan bebeğini Edward'ın haberi olmadan kürtaj yaptırmasını anlatıyorlar. Ve bundan sonra da Edward'ın yıkıldığını gösteriyorlar.

Filmin sonunda güzel bir metaforu daha gördüm.

Kitap ile Susan'la Edward'ın yaşadığı geçmişin nasıl bir bağlantısı olduğu:

1. Edward Susan’a gece hayvanları diyordu. Kitaba da bu ismi verdi. Başındaki "For Susan" da açık bir göndermeydi.

2. si ise Kitaptaki Ray, aslında Susandı. Susan'ın kürtaj yapmasını kitap, Ray'in Tony'nin eşiyle kızını öldürmesi olarak göstermiş. Bu yüzden Ray'in Tony ve ailesini arabayla yoldan çıkardığı sahne bu kadar uzun sürüyor. Çünkü o sahne aslında ilişkilerinin çıtırdadığı, yıkılmaya doğru gittiği olayın metaforu. Edward'ın ilişkiyi korumaya çalışması ama olan etkilerle ilişkinin daha fazla dayanamayıp yıkılması. Rahatsız edici ve durumun ne kadar kötü olduğunu göstermek için o sahneyi uzun tutmuşlar bence.

Burada Tony'nin Susan oluşu önemli. Susan'ın yaptıklarını anlamlandırmak istiyor.) Gerçek hayatta ise Edward, Susan'dan intikamını, "Gece Hayvanları" adını verdiği bu kitabı ona yollayarak alıyor.

Susan eskiden kötü bulduğu Edward’ın yazılarını bu sefer ise beğeniyor. Bence flashbackte beğenmemesinin sebebi ilişkilerinin çatırdayışıydı. Edward'a karşı soğuk hissediyordu. Ona para kazandırmayan bu işi yapmaya devam etmesi,hırslı olmaması onu sinir etmeye başlamıştı.

Birde filmin en sonunu konuşalım.

Kitapta Tony karakteri, intikamını aldıktan sonra ayağı yere takılıyor ve yanlışlıkla kendini vurarak canını kaybediyor. Ve kitap da öylece bitiyor.

Ve tam bu sırada da gerçek hayatta Susan, Edward'ı ne kadar özlediğini anlıyor ve onunla buluşmak istiyor. Susan buluşma yerine gittiğinde orada saatlerce bekliyor ama Edward bir türlü gelmiyor.

Filmin son karesinde ise , Susan'ın gözlerini gösteriyorlar.

Geçmişe yapılan flashbacklerden birinde Edward, Susan'a şöyle bir şey demişti: "Gözlerin annene çok benziyor. Hüzünlü. Ama çok güzel." Susan da annesine benzememek istediğinden, Edward'ın dediğine karşı çıkmıştı. Filmin son karesinde, Susan'ın annesine benzediğini hatta annesinin aynısı olduğunu görüyoruz.

Yani kısacası, Edward'la Susan'ın birlikte yaşadığı şeyleri birebir anlatmak yerine "Gece Hayvanları" kitabı üzerinden anlatılmış."

Filmi beğendim ama 2. ye izlemem. Alt metini görmeyen biri için çok düz gibi duruyor. Alt metini gören biri içinse 2. kere izletecek sahneleri yok bence.

Ama kesinlikle takdir ettiğim bir film olmuş. Herkesin bildiği ayrılık hikayesini kitap yoluyla, bambaşka bir şekilde anlatan bu film gerçekten de bir usta anlatımı olmuş. Hoş olmuş ^_^
